G Tablet Review
This ViewSonic tablet is one of the first 10 inch branded Android 2.2 tablets in the markets which dared to compete with iPad on a large 10 inch screen. Interestingly, majority of previous Android tablets had targeted 7 inch screens eventhough their main idea were a real rivalry with iPad, such as Samsung Galaxy Tab. We surely do not count the cheap Made in China resistive screen tablets in this reasoning.
Having strong hardware specs, View Sonic G tablet unfortunately lacks the opportunity to become an iPad killer due to insufficient software specs. First of all, G tablet uses Android 2.2 OS which is smartphone optimized but lacks on a tablet in many aspects, especially the new ViewSonic interface features which were built upon Android. But, still ViewSonic G tablet is a good cheap alternative to iPad and if ViewSonic makes the stock software updates they promise, it would be a great buy with these hardware specs.
There are 4 capacitive touch screen buttons on the right which is usual in Android gadgets. These are Search, Home, Menu and Back buttons.
Microphone pinhole and docking port is on the buttom. The volume is placed on the top which is easy to use. Power button, microSD card slot, USB port, headphone jack, miniUSB port and power adapter socket are on the left side. The builtin speakers are on left and right sides. If you hold the ViewSonic tablet in landscape mode, you should be careful not to cover the speakers.
Let's talk about G tablet user interface more. Instead of highly customizable Android desktop, we get a very large dashboard full of utilities such as news, notes, weather, clocks, calendar and contacts. It allows some customization and organization but not to that extent which Android provides. App drawer which is on the bottom and the toolbar is customizable, to some degree.
As we have said before, the tablet has great hardware specs (Especially, Nvidia Tegra 2 processor with 1GHz) which would be perfect if only.. if only it had official Google services and Android Market. Yeah, there is link to Handango market but it is not comparable to Android market. Many applications can crash as well. So, I think a firmware update or XDA developers work can bring Android Market to G tablet owners.
What G Tablet handles superbly is the media playing. HD videos play perfectly at 1080p. and the ViewSonic tablet handles any video format flawlessly. MPEG-4, Xvid, DivX, H.264, MOV.
8 to 10 hours of battery time although it will be surely lower on watching HD videos and visiting websites with heavy Flash.
Important Note: By the time of writing this hub, G Tablet was getting a huge software update by ViewSonic. So, many software features could be properly optimized now.
